ANCIENT RUSSIA

Rosiches related to their gods as their friends, which helped them in their life or assisted in their business. But if the gods offended the Rosiches, they were later punished. They were deprived of a meal. This was included in the general religious ideas of ancient Russia. For Rosiches, the god was more of an older brother or a teacher, then the modern understanding of God.

All religions of the world have worship for a God, but in Russia, gods lived with relatives as members of the same social group. Thus, it is reasonable to say that social stereotypes existed in the Ancient Russian Society.

If the god of the Hunt did not give the bag to the Rosich (the name for the Ancient Russians), it was then possible for the Rosich to punish this god. A Rosich had the power to crush the god (to fire him) or to deprive the god of a meal (sacrifice). If a god’s destruction occurred, a new one was later produced.

The supreme god was the god of the Sun, named PERUN. There was a T’MA of gods (T’MA = one thousand).

What was the basis of this partnership?
Who were the leaders? The Rosiches or the gods?

The sacredness of a Rosich depended on the cleanliness of his nature – internal, spiritual cleanliness; cleanliness of body; cleanliness of his environment; including social, moral and economic cleanliness of trade relations. Thus, the process of cleansing spiritual “dirt” was the process of increasing the degree of the “Sacredness” of members of the Ancient Society, and consequently, to present them to their gods.

Because of the fact that the Rosiches considered themselves to be demigods and their sacredness depended on the process of cleansing, when Russia converted to Christianity it seemed to be the beginning of the end of Ancient Russia’s Social Society from the formal point of view. The closest picture one can get of the Conversion is the 300 years of Mongolian rule (1227-1480) (Mongolian Yoke) and the destruction of the Roman Empire from the Vandals’ invasion. In the history of Ancient (Pre-Christianity) Russia there was not the slightest hint that incoming tribes could win a battle over the Rosiches.

A Christian who worships God immediately becomes as God-slave. Therefore, he has no psychological protection from external factors, unlike the pagan, who is accustomed to satisfying the instinct of self-preservation using natural forces without relying on help from any magic. Christian psychology during that time period in no way differs from slave psychology.

The essence of Christianity when it arrived in Russia was the social structure of total slavery to worship and subordination to Christian symbols and their presenters.

Nevertheless, people do things relating to Christianity, without first considering their consequences. In the past and present, as well as everywhere, Christian activists and Christianity itself is guilty of this. Even in the modern world under their guise of using Christ’s name, terrible crimes are committed. And what can one say about times when information exchange between social groups
barely exists.

The epochal achievement of Mankind appears to be the knowledge of how to separate “the grain from kernel”, that is, determining that which is from the Lord and that which is made in his name by the people! Idle talks and conclusions on Christ’s behalf, purported to be Christian Morality, have caused war, ideological genocide and inquisitions.

The attitude of the Rosiches to natural resources (Flora & Fauna)

Rosiches took both fish and animal. They took both to store, and for exchange, but they only took as much as necessary. The stocks were calculated with the utmost care as were the exact amount of the needs (requirements) of society, thereby, “business-plan” was created over the span of many years.

The development of the pre-historical business plan was by the main economist-manager, generally the Chief of the community (president, chairman of the board), who used expert statistics from the Council of Olderman (board, Board of Directors).

The decisions of the Council of Oldermen, in agreement with decisions of the Chief, determined how many fish (animals, birds) would be taken; how many mushrooms, berries and meal-roots it was necessary to be prepared; the how much grain was necessary to sow for the purpose of a bountiful harvest; how many cows were necessary to be kept, and how many had to be slaughtered for their meat, etc.

Thus, the pre-Russian community could be a good model of an economic-balanced society. But such self-closed societies have very little stimulus for development.

For the development of any self-organizing system, including social, it is necessary to have the availability of not a static, but a dynamic balance between negative and positive factors, that is –Homoeostasis. HOMOEOSTASIS (from Greek –homoios / like/ + stasis) the tendency towards relatively stable dynamic equilibrium between inter-dependent elements especially as maintained by physiological processes and high-complicated self-regulated systems.

Homoeostasis provides the support for the essential features needed for the system’s self-care in allowable limits. This concept was introduced by the American physiologist Walter Cannon (1871-1945). The basis of concepts such as: cybernetics, psychology, sociology, etc.

If in the ancient Russian Society there existed such a dynamic balance, they would be so engaged with decisions pertaining to practical tasks that they would simply have no time for abstract and religious thinking.

The stagnation of the Roman Empire before the Vandals' invasion shows the total absence of a homoeostatic structure in the Roman Society, and consequently, on lowered social resistance against the Vandals.

While the Rosiches were pagans, no one was able to defeat them on their land or to take away their material and spiritual values. 300 Rosiches once reached Constantinople (865) but were forced to retreat because there was not enough room in their telegas (telega = wagon) to include values. The details of the actual events can be found in Nikolai Mikhailovich Karamsin’s (1766-1826) works. The Byzantines were very concerned about the situation, so they sent their troops of Christianity to Russia and began its degeneration!

Briefly: the technique of “gods’ application”

he relationship between gods and people was definitely simple. The Rosiches addressed the god, as if a father, a senior brother, or a teacher (guru). People performed large sacrifices to gods that is to say that the god was fed, given water, and dressed (decorated). If a god defaulted on a request, the meal was being taken away from him and sometimes he was even fired and a short time later a new god was created.

The night of Ivan-Kupala’s day-eve

The Rosiches were a militaristic people who constantly showed a deficit in the male population –there were an extremely small number of males due to constant losses to forays and wars. The main matter on this holiday’s-eve night was to provide the cleansing rituals with psychological, magical, mystical and social preparation of each Holiday participant in order to free the consciousness.

On this Night of Love everyone absolved everyone. It was the Night of Love for every believer of the Holiday (sexual intercourse between a daughter and her father was forbidden –the beginning of genetic knowledge was already taking place). It was accepted as normal when a husband chose another woman or girl from his wife’s girlfriends and his wife was with another man from the neighbors. All this had only one goal: to get the maximum number of pregnancies

In Ancient Society the children were brought up and educated by the entire community, therefore there was very little interest to which the children were born to. Consequently, surnames were taken away. In Western Europe the genealogical (family) tree played a considerably more important role. Summary: The main purpose of the Holiday was the Duplication of Life instead of making pleasure for the gods.

The evening of Ivan-Kupala’s day
(*comment: The Sun – “He”, not “It”!)

On the day (Solntzevorot-day) of Summer Solstice, it was the shortest night and the longest day of the year. The ancient belief was that the sun is forced down from his way and the clear-eyes girl Zarya (Daybreak) helps him on his way again. She not only conducts him across the sky, but also cleans him with water (wash him) with the help of the early-morning dew from the summer well which fragranced the fields of grass. Therefore when the morning dew was on the grass, people bathed with the power over each other using cold water and floated in the river. They believed that the water on this day has a specific cleansing force.

For the cultivator, Solntevorot-day, was June 24. It was a time when Nature opened to him all its vital forces and natural treasures of the ground. On this turning point day, Kupala’s Day was celebrated. The name “Kupala” was the ancient image of the fertility of the land during summer and the holiday was in its honour, which preceded tne gathering.

On Kupala’s Holiday, bonfires lit up the fields, river banks and hills. The fire of Kupala’s bonfires, prepared by rubbing wood together, was named “Living fire”. The fire was the symbolic representation of the Sun’s power and the ritual worship based on the increasing reproductive activity of both the people and Nature (fertility of the land and fruiting of the trees). It was believed that jumping through the bonfires people would be cleansed before the beginning of harvest and they became more healthy and powerful.

Traditionally, on Kupala’s day, it was believed that many grasses and plants acquired specific healthcare forces. The young people went out on the morning of Kupala’s Day to the fields to collect the grasses, such as “kupalenka”, “medvez’ye ushko” (little bear ears), “bogatenka” (the grass of the rich men), “razryv-trawa” (love-break-grass). These grasses were then placed under the head of the bed to help having dreams which on this night were considered to be prophetic.

The Mongolian Yoke had come to Russia. Along with its arrival came the loss of the ancient Russia’s joyful holidays. The Great Trouble had come and there was no room for holidays in Russian life.

Russian girls became the victims of slave trade among the Mongolian troops because they were generously gifted in the areas of beauty in both their face and body. In order to avoid Mongolian attention and slavery, Russian girls would intentionally ruin their beauty. They would dirty their face with smoke, swaddle their breasts with linen and walk with a stoop.

The effects of three centuries of the Mongolian Yoke are still being felt in the present. Russian women do not know how to show off their bodies, even when clothed. They seem to hide their body everywhere.

New Times have come and three hundred years of the Mongolian Yoke is buried in oblivion, though three centuries of violence and oppression as left an indelible mark on Russia’s cultural traditions.

Pristine Naturism of the Rosiches, as well as, the set of naturist elements in Russian society of later centuries was the general norm of behavior continuing down to the beginning of the reign of Empress Catherine II (1762-1796).

Russian Baths, from time immemorial, were communal for both males and females, though washing rooms were segregated by sex. The steam and dressing rooms were also communal. Nudity in Russian society was still not dishounarble as one of the main principles of Russian society was based on the principles of nudism/naturism. It was simply a natural, social style of behaviour.

Note should be taken that during the dark period of the Middle Ages as the flames of the Inquisition, on which were burned beautiful women, spread throughout Europe, it was not as severe nor as wide spread in Russia. There were weighty problems, to be sure, but fortunately, the “Witch Hunt” didn’t occur. There are several reasons for this:
1. There was no strong, centralized State authority until the reign of Peter the Great (1672-1725), as well as, no strong, centralized religious power as there was in Western Europe.
2. Christianity in Russia was Orthodox, as opposed to Catholic, as in the rest of Europe, so it had a more humanistic side.
3. Russia did not partake in Crusades.
4. Lastly, the tone of Russian life remained in some sense “pagan” or “natural”.

In Russia the natural economy continued until the second half of the 19^th century. To know the meaning of the term “the natural economy”, you have to understand that 90% of the Russian population was farmers. There was low population density and there was a low-level of culture from the standpoint of civilization as education, medicine, etc. were scarce. (Here we don’t touch upon the economic part of the term.)

Therefore in each Russian village, instead of a doctor, there was a folk leader. They healed with what is now referred mutual resource such as water, air, Russian Baths and herbs. All of these resources are elements of naturism.

Moreover, there are many national customs which could possibly be understood as the continuation of pagan or natural ways, since the old days determined conditions on when it was time to work the fields, sow the seed, etc. Peasants honor these ancient customs very much (and they stool alone from Christianity!)

In spring, before sowing has begun, a husband should make love to his wife on arable land. In so doing, insure that there will be a good harvest.

In summer, after the end of sowing, on the night of Kupala’s Day Eve, the same is done for the same purpose.

At the end of summer, after the last sheaf was made, naked women somersaulted and rolled on naked, arable land for the purpose of removing the tiredness from their bodies and from the land.

In winter, after a Russian bath, males swam in a hole in the ice of lakes and river and females rolled in the snow. It was done in order to catch the power of the water and for good health.

The Peasant tone of Russian life was very close to nature was natural and even expedient. Therefore, nudity was understood to be a part of nature.

The persecution of social nudity (hereafter SN) began with the rise to authority in Russia of the Prussian Princess who was born and raised in the center of Europe in a poor nobility family which had a set of sanctimonious elements of behavior. The Princess became the Empress Catherine II.

Religious authority rose in power and became Western European oriented. Already in the cities Russian Baths were prohibited, but in the villages the new fashion had not come, so nothing really changed.

If SN of the ancient Rosiches was the bright expression of ritual character. Russians from the time of the Mongolian Yoke to the reign of Catherine II considered it to be simply ordinary phenomenon. After the imposition of restrictions on SN, the notice the loss!

Europe had come to Russia and brought with it not only religious, secular education and temporal power, but also with European immigrants, the European fashion of milky-white skin. Now all women tried to protect themselves from direct sunlight. Umbrellas and swimming suits, which covered the body from the neck to the heels, appeared. Sunburn was considered to be extremely vulgar and was condemned by society.

A comment:

There is a novel by Aleksander Sergeevich Pushkin (1799-1837), “Baron’s Daughter-Peasant’s Daughter”, wherein a young noble lady born with light brown skin could pass herself off as a peasant girl and upon her “sunburned face” lies the basis of the main plot.

The situation continued until the reign of Nicholas II (1894-1917), who not only removed all restrictions on SN but he was also an avid participant and believer in nudist ideals. The thought that nudity could help preserve and improve the health of society. His entire family and their attendants were also followers of nudism. One can readily see this from the photographic and cinematic records of the Tsarist family.

At the same time, there was no philosophic basis for nudism in Russia at all. It was the natural nudity of individuals based on the primordial Russian style of behavior.

Why was there a prohibition on SN during the reign of Empress Catherine II? The fact is, in Russian history. Catherine II is considered to be the most extravagant of all Russian Empresses. The lifestyle forced upon the Russian court by Catherine II resulted in extravagance of the entire ruling clique. This extravagance may be considered to be the major factor in the prosecution of SN. Nudity was declared to be a sin, i.e. to be harm to society.

From the start of the reign of Bolshevism until the creation of the U.S.S.R., SN was not considered to be harm to society. It is rumored that Lenin himself enjoyed the pleasure of being naked in the sun. Then Stalin came to power, creating a totalitarian society and almost immediately began prosecuting SN.

It seems that in a society where the ruling clique is very extravagant, from the standpoint of common morality; where totalitarianism is present (it can be qualified as extravagance of power and policy); where there is infringement upon the vital interests of the social majority; there is complete absence of social and body freedom.

During the time of Khrushchev’s “thaw” in the mid-sixties, Soviet naturists began to spread across the land naturally, illegally and in secret locations.

But in the country named “The Country of Socialist Victory”, there was no place for each human behavior. It was considered that in the U.S.S.R. there was no prostitution, no Western-style Sexual Revolution –there was no sex at all! Under these conditions there were no nudists/naturists either. Nudists were considered to be mentally deranged.

Since 1986 with the arrival of “Reorganization” and general democratization (Perestroika) of society, first in the former Soviet Baltic States and later in the major cities of Russia, the legalization of naturist societies has begun. It is interesting to note that nearly all officially registered Russian societies are not referred to as being nudist. There are societies of “Healthy Lifestyle,” the “Societies of Sun Fans,” “Free Body Culture Society,” various clubs named “Harmony,” “Sun,” “Aqua,” etc. Why?

The foreign word, “nudism,” has no roots in Russia because of past history. It was definitely connected with bad behavior from the point of view of Soviet leaders. Russian naturism has a multi-century link with the defense of nature. Its motto is “The Health of Spirit, the Health of Body and the Health of Nature”. It seems like the other side of the religious “coin,” named the Russian Holy Trinity.

The following are brief remarks not relating to the main article:

1. We would like to consider here the aspect of Russian naturism.
As a rule, the average Russian naturist is representative of the middle to lower economic classes of Russians.
Representatives of the “New Russian Rich People” (major businessmen), presently would not prefer to relax on a common-clothing-optional beach.

The social mask of big businessmen imitates the lifestyle of the prosperous Western nouveau riche.

Such a lifestyle includes some compulsory (from the nouveau riche viewpoint) elements:
- relax on the most fashionable beaches of the West
- following fashion, particularly the present Western fashion of snow-white skin among the upper class
- the belief that sunburn and intense solar radiation is harmful!

It is very important for Russian big businessmen to achieve a preferential level of safety. This includes body protection and defense against unauthorized photo or film of them in public places.

On the other hand, many of our famous businessmen, actors and other unsanctimonious people would like to become naturists, but they are forced to follow the rules of behavior for their class.

It is well known here that most Russian naturists are intelligent people: students, small businessmen, doctors, etc. By the way, there are very few workers as well as big businessmen in naturism.

2. We certainly do not think that Russian naturism is a unique one. Probably, the history of naturism is closely linked with the history of other peoples and has historical roots. It would be interesting to get acquainted with the history of other nations with respect to naturism. Perhaps we have more in common than sunburns in certain places!

3. Russia has only just recently learned about the effects of long-term exposure to sunlight and its effect on mental and psychical health.

We are very interested in learning about how you deal with these problems.

The Novosibirsk Naturist Helios club is closed to ice swimming in winter, but this season, summer sunbathing started already on 8 April. It became possible due to an incredibly warm spring. It was 19°C. (59°F.) on that day, and windstill. Since early March there had been no ice on the Ob river near Novosibirsk City, but the thickness safe to go swimming there (or rather, to walk out on the ice to the edge of clear water). At the same time, the beach is without snow in many places, and the sand is almost dry and warm enough. We were lying in the sun for three hours, as if it were in June, but that was after bathing in the ice water.

The Siberian summer is very short and full of surprises. Occasionally it has snowed in June. If you want to get a dark suntan you should start early in the season and lie in the sun every sunny day. Suntanning at the Black Sea makes you darker, but the Siberian Sun makes your tan stay longer.

The above information was published in a local paper “Evening Novosibirsk,” and it was also announced by three local radio stations. They had called for the citizens to enjoy our invitation for Saturday 12 April.

Bathing in ice water has ten advantages: mental clarity, freshness, energy, strength, beauty, youth, cleanliness, smooth skin, attractiveness, and health. This was written in one of the ancient books.

CLOTHING-OPTIONAL LIFESTYLE IN THE “NORTH CAPITAL” OF RUSSIA

If you decide to travel to Russia, one of the best destinations for you is St. Petersburg. St. Petersburg is a well-known cultural and historical centre, and we have no doubt that whenever you visit the “North Capital” you will be deeply impressed by its beauty. But what to do if no events are scheduled for today for your tourist group and the summer sun is bleaching you in stifling downtown? It is clear, of course what everyone of us wants in such a case. Few years ago, however, you had to forget your being naturist until the return to your native country… But now please throw away your bathing-suits from your suitcase when preparing to travel to St. Petersburg.

On behalf of the St. Petersburg Naturist Society we welcome you to our beautiful naturist place. A fine sandy beach surrounded with pine-trees is located near the Gulf of Finland. Regrettably, there is no possibility for accommodation (some fans put up tents here, though) but the beach is very convenient for one-day visit. If you have a natural seduction to look at it, it would be ideal if you could contact our office ahead of time before your visit. Then, you will be escorted to the clothing-optional beach by a member of our club. If you want to come on your own, you should take the subway to Lenin Square, reach Finland Railway Station and catch the local train to Kurort Station (it takes about 1 hour, price approx. USD 1,70 for a return ticket.) From Kurort Station you should go along the foreshore of the Gulf (water-left) for about 30min. It is wise to depart early (say at 8am.)

The summer of 1992 was a turning point in the development of naturism in Russia. That year the Naturist Society of St. Petersburg (called also Free-Body Culture Society) became an officially recognized organization and the fans of naturism had the possibility of enjoying nude recreation without any risk. Since 1992 the clothing-optional lifestyle has become more and more popular among the people of all ages and walks of life in St. Petersburg.

Here are some bare facts in our city.

In 1992/93, the number of male naturists considerably exceeded that of the female ones. Today the female/male ratio is about 40/60 and some days approaches 50/50. The average age of sunbathers is somewhat between 30 and 40. The membership in the Naturist Society costs USD5.00 per person per year. Women have a privilege of a membership fee twice reduced. Children under 16 may be enrolled only with their parents or with the accompanying adults.

Like in all regular European naturist resorts, overt intimacy of any kind is strictly prohibited even for married couples. Cameras are not forbidden but you should be convinced that only those who wish will appear in the pictures.

We are striving to manifest naturism as a part of healthy lifestyle and to prove its positive effect on physical and mental health both for ourselves and for non-naturists. This is why most of the naturists of all ages participate in different sport activities in the nude like volleyball, football and swimming instead of just lying in the sun. Our beach is rather clean in comparison with textile beaches near St. Petersburg and every effort is made for this purpose. Sometines, a yacht is anchored off the beach where a small dance party is organized. Many naturists prefer natural food such as fruits, juice or beef to cakes, candies and wine. Although smoking and moderate consumption of alcohol is not forbidden here, only a small part of visitors does so. Quite a few have given up smoking since they became naturists.

More than eighty percent of St. Petersburg’s naturists are college-educated individuals, many were awarded M.S., M.A. or even Ph.D. degrees. Many are fluent in foreign languages, play musical instruments, and have a wide knowledge in history, culture and art. So when you visit our beach you will find interesting people here and it is quite probable that you will wish to make a contact with somebody for friendship and to return visits. Even if you do not know a word of Russian, you most probably find people who will be glad to have a chat with you in your native language.

Attendance of the clothing-optional beach is unlimited and open to everyone regardless of age, family status, sex, shape and size. There is no quota for different naturists like, for example, in some North American clubs. We only would not like to meet here those who come for “sightseeing” rather than for the rest and relaxation. Occasionally, such people show up from time to time so we have to make them leave and not to return again. Foreign visitors are always most welcome but, as we may deduce from conversations with tourists, most of them mistakenly believe that nude beaches are prohibited in Russia.

Information on naturism in our city is provided by the Holynature internet site (http://www.holynature.ru). It is an interesting web site though it has been primarily designed for other purposes than the promotion of naturism, and is mainly dedicated to all forms of beauty: nature, body, science, art, erotica etc. For this reason one should not regard it as a true naturist site. Regretfully some of the readers of the above site have misinterpreted its concept and started suggesting that only those who are young and pretty is worth becoming nudists in our city. In fact, none of us share it. Like in any European naturist club, body acceptance is a condition “sine qua non” for each one of us.

The gay/lesbian section is adjacent to the beach and attracts people with non-standard sexual orientation. However, nobody minds gay male or female coming to the “conventional” part of the beach. Usually the gay section is frequented by 50-100 individuals and looks almost deserted.

There are several high-qualified artists who are ready and able to make your full-length portrait directly at the beach. A small display of such portraits is periodically held. Usually, the sketch is being made free of charge, but further you should either agree to your portrait to be exhibited or pay for the work of an artist or take it with you when it is ready. There is one painter specializing in body art who can colour you with flowers stars and leaves. People often hesitate when being suddenly offered such a thing after overcoming an initial inconvenience all “models” are very glad that had agreed. Now this painter makes efforts to initiate new direction of body art by trying the Japanese calligraphy.

If you would like to visit a Bath you are strongly advised to contact the Board of the Free Body Culture well in advance since only a member of the club may be admitted “automatically.” However, if you have a naturist certificate issued in your country, you may enter with no problems. The Russian steam bath with a sauna (c0nveniently situated to access it from the centre) is open to naturists each Monday from 6 to 10p.m. and Friday from 7 to 11p.m. The naturist bath is an excellent way to avoid losing contact between us in winter. This is a very good bath (at least there is no doubt that it is one of the best baths in St. Petersburg.)

Many of us became friends and several special interest groups were formed. In particular, there is one group whose participants often go to the theatres and museums together, and afterwards compare notes in an informal clothing-optional atmosphere (on the beach or at home.) From time to time Free Nude Celebrities are held. The members of another group prefer going together in the forests to collect mushrooms or cranberries, especially in autumn. Usually, nobody minds non-naturists joining such activities.

Moreover, St. Petersburg naturist society became a leading organization within the framework of the National Federation for Naturism (NFfN). The NFfN is an officially recognized All-Russian naturist association. If you wish to visit the NFfN-affiliated clubs in Murmansk or Vladivostok, Moscow or Astrakhan, you will be always welcomed. It is the end of November. Here in Siberia a real winter started already a month ago with frost to minus 20 degrees and a lot of snow. Snow is a very good thing for industrial Novosibirsk with a lot of transport. A week without snow and all the streets are getting dirty with soot. Walking about the streets you can only dream of the sun, green grass, blue sea and sky, but you realize that summer will come only in five months. However, when white fluffy miracle is in the air and snowflakes decorate streets, trees, roofs, fur coats and caps you think happily that Christmas and the New Year holidays are just in one month. You think of your friends and of unforgettable summer days on the naturist beach. I open an album and pictures immediately take me into hot summer days I spent with my small son on the beach, the favorite place of local naturists.

It was not easy for me to make up my mind to go to the beach with my kid. Hot weather and nearly two hours by public transport. So much to foresee and to take for the child. He needs a good sleep in the afternoon. Will he be able to sleep in the unknown place? Will I have a good time and the opportunity to enjoy swimming and sunbathing? I definitely did not want to stay in the hot dusty city and I gave up all the doubts. And I won. The day that I spent together with my friends from the naturist club "Helios" was terrific. Everybody was glad to see us. My friends entertained the child, giving me time for swimming or playing ball. I enjoyed fresh air filled with a smell of pine-trees surrounding the beach. Bushes gave me a good shade when we needed it. Even our trip home was not distressing. That day gave us a new friend with a car and he gave us a lift. On my way home I was thinking that when people take off their clothes for the union with nature, they also open their souls for joy. The play in the water like children. Nobody cares how he looks, but sure that he is nice and open towards the others.

IN THE ANTIQUE EPOCH

The word “Helios” is associated with something forbidden or even shameful in the opinion of the Novosibirsk inhabitants. It is so uncommon to see the get-together of nude persons. Why, and what for? The explanation is very simple: They want to feel the nature of being Man, and Woman. There is something about our club.

Here is Angela’s monologue (she is an aerobics coach and naturist for a year): “While working as a coach I have noticed how the majority of our women are unnatural and timid. They could not imagine that they possess nature’s greatest gift, their won body. They didn’t know how to govern it. That was especially noticeable among the young women and girls who lacked in free mobility. They lost their beauty. That can be explained by the fact that our society does not pay proper attention to the culture of the human body. Naturists attracted me as people who honor their own bodies. The younger people have become naturists more easily.

My joining the naturist club was quite natural. Before my entering the club, I used to bathe and lie in the sunshine, without any clothes. It was wonderful to feel the unity with sunshine, the greenery, and the grass. It made me calm and self-confident.

I was a bit curious about Novosibirsk club “Helios”. First, my figure had changed for the better and I needed somebody to notify it. Secondly, I wanted to learn how the other persons felt about their bodies when they had become naturists. I was greatly interested in morals. As I understood it, there are dual morals in our society. It depends on gender. I think there is no such thing among the naturists.

Between male and female naturists there is always mutual understanding and mutual respect. They are humans.

The atmosphere of partnership reigns here. There is necessity for leadership. The organizers do not differ from the rank and file members. You come here to communicate and you get this chance.

A nudist man being a knight towards a nudist woman inspires the man to great deeds.

Naturists overcome the limits of daily life, showing the best inborn abilities. They have gained other personalities, at least for a while.

The naturist world differs from the outside society. It is noticeable when it concerns the position of woman. In everyday life the pressure of house work deprives a woman of communication. She is always face to face with her husband and her children only, and here in the club she enjoys the company of joyful, equal people.

I am sure our society is approaching an understanding of the beauty of a nude male body, like was the case in antique times.

In all ears clothing demonstrated the social status of man. Nowadays when we suffer from lack of culture and upbringing, a person’s clothes show his or her income; it is a decisive moment of evaluation of the person. It is unjust. Not everyone can reach wealthy comfort, but every man and woman is able to improve their own bodies. And only the naturists can achieve true enjoyment. “As far my birthday” party we have baked a round loaf –it is an interpretation of a phrase from a Russian children’s song performed at a birthday party.

Instead of complaining about a birthday happening only once a year, you shall make you birthday unforgettable.

If I ask you to remember your best birthday, could you tell me the largest number of guests at the birthday party? Recently I have been to a celebration where there were 70 visitors. Could you guess that this place was in a sauna? Only the visitors were not ordinary. They were nudists, those people who don’t wear their swimming suits on the beach. I say, they are very joyful!

At first everything was quite as usual: I swam in the swimming pool and took a steam bath.

Then Vladimir Solntzev came, the leader of Novosibirsk Nudist Club. He was the main person at this event. Everything changed at once!

It is high time to tell you, dear reader, how the club has begun and Vladimir Solntzev merged separate nudist clubs into a mighty Helios club.

It so happened that 11 members of our club were born under the zodiacal sign of Scorpio and our leader Vladimir Solntzev is one of them.

I had to think about how to make that day a special one. At last I decided to baptize them once more; let the believers forgive my decision! I sprayed them with water from the swimming pool, called them by their names, and tied ribbons to their heads –blue ribbons for men and pink for women. We presented the “Happy Birthday!” song in chorus.

We laid the table with a diversity of dishes, and beautiful girls were the best decoration of the table. The girls wore bunches of bananas and chocolate medals. The greatest fun was when a man tried to get a banana or a chocolate medal from a girl; the man could not see the girl because his eyes were blind-folded. The spectators had fun too.

That was only the beginning. During our Siberian winter we lacked sunshine and the chocolate tan. That is why we tried to use the chocolate mousse which was brought by Vladimir Solntzev for making him instantly suntanned. I no time at all Vova’s body became dark brown with spots of raising and nuts.

The celebration was marked by the traditional Russian songs and dancing accompanied by Russian accordion. Everyone did his or her best. They performed the oldest Russian dances: “Kamarinskaya” and “Barynja” (Russian folk dances). Among the dances there was “The Naked Tango” performed literally. For an hour, chanted rhymes about nudism were presented.

Before saying goodbye, the woman decorated the men’s bodies with lipstick, and the men did the same to the women’s bodies with paint and paint brushes.

The celebration made a great impression on me. I would like you, dear reader, to share my admiration and delight which I felt on that day.

May 3. We had a plan to clean the area where our club gathers in summer. So we prepared a place for tenting. After this we decided to take to the ice (in two days it would melt). Despite the sunshine being strong, the ice reflected coldness, and soon we felt uncomfortable and returned to shore.

May 10. The water! It is free of ice but very cold. We want to swim very much, but nobody dares to, so we gathered on shore. We are very glad to meet, because some of us haven’t seen each other since past summer.

In Siberia the summer is too short, and the winter enormously long, but we have a feeling that we had been together only yesterday. We shall now have three months of frequent meetings, swimming and sunbathing, of holidays and leisure.

GUEST OF NATURIST ADAMITES IN RYBINSK

I had already heard and read much about the original religious group of naturists-Adamites in the Rybinsk/Yaroslavl region. For 3 years I had been corresponding with the leader (pastor) of those Adamites-nudists. Lev Moshinsky, is a very interesting and wise person. But only this July did I manage to visit them in their town, in the north of Russia, and during the 2 days I became acquainted with several adapts of this very original religious group, and from the closeness I got to know their lifestyle, beliefs, naturist state, etc.

Under the guidance of Lev Moshinsky the Adamites in general try to reestablish and renovate the gnostic religiosity of the spiritual teacher Carpokrates who lived during the Roman Empire in Alexandria, in second century A.D. After his death, his son Epiphanes led that sect which was also named after him (the son).

They believe in the Old Testament of the god Jehovah; they like Christ, prophet "Yeshua Ha-Nocri". They strive to create the lost Paradise in their group. A very important part of their faith and practise is the "holy nudity", the purity of body and mind and thoughts. Clothes set humans apart from each other; nudity as the great equalizer brings everybody closer together. Nudity, free eroticism, and sex life are not sins but Divinely approved matters, so that the human soul, that eternal spirit, may have a fine evolution and through a series of reincarnations get closer to very higher spiritual, divine spheres in heaven. Nothing should be prohibited which does not oppose the 10 rules of the Decalogue (The Ten Commandments) which God ordered for mankind. They believe that humans shall pass through, experience all pleasures permitted by God for bodily senses, so that after the body's death the soul should not regret its not very successful past life, miserable on the Earth, and thus not strive to return as a soul, but in freedom, easily, not regretting the past life, enter the Divine Spheres, to Paradise. Therefore they now create the lost Eden, and I can say that they succeed well in that, and feel happy.

Smoking is prohibited, and so is drinking brandy (wine is OK!); they may have sex with anyone among their fellow Adamites (if those agree, surely). Wives may do that with permission from the husband; men may have several mistresses, but the wife may not protest.

They also practise nudity at home, and through special arrangements naturists from Yaroslavl and Moscow also participate. They all seem to be very nice, kind, and sincere persons.

BEACHFRONT U.S.A..

Beachfront U.S.A. was born in 1972 in the mind of Eugene Callen, a German-American resident of Santa Monica, California. Callen was a frequenter of Los Angeles nude beaches, and one day on the way to the ocean, he noticed a sign BEACHFRONT. Tacking on "U.S.A.", he achieved a euphonius name for an organization he felt was becoming increasingly necessary. He liked the name so much he registered it.

The world's first "freebeach" was initiated on the German North Sea island of Sylt in 1925. The concept of a nudist beach where any member of the public could visit soon spread to France, but it did not solidify into reality in the United States until 1967, which saw the first American freebeach at San Gregorio in northern California. Once the idea proved viable, other free beaches began springing up all along the California coast as well as on the east coast.

Unfortunately, law officers began sporadic arrests of nude sunbathers, charging them with indecent exposure, a criminal sexual offense under the state's penal code section 314. But in 1972 in the Chad Merrill Smith case, the California Supreme Court unanimously decided that mere nudity unaccompanied by lewd intent was not a sexual offense. The police found themselves disarmed.

On Monday 15 Oct 1973 Eugene Callen called a meeting of friends and nude beach activists to translate the "Beachfront U.S.A." into a formal organization. About 50 people gathered at a private home in West Hollywood. Here were introductory remarks by Callen, a less than riveting speaker, and then an amateur but skillful motion picture documentary of police misbehavior at area nude beaches was shown by Bill Ehrhart (still a member of BFUSA today). Finally, as the evening's last item, a pro tem organizing committee was appointed more or less off the top of his head by Callen, acclaimed the group's first President. The head of the committee disappeared after a couple of weeks, but the organization muddled on.

The subsequent nude beach at Venice, California, was the first success for the embryonic BFUSA. A thousand Venice maps were passed out at other area freebeaches such as Pirate's Cove, Malibu, and the number of nude bathers increased steadily at Brooks Beach, Venice. The police were informed that in the absence of specific anti-nude bathing legislation. BFUSA would challenge any arrests in the courts.

Politicians are practical people. Seeing the popularity of the nude beach, Los Angeles City Council members were ready to cooperate in setting off an area for the nudists. They were even working together with Beachfront to bring it about.

At first the Council's legislation passed by a 10-3 vote! Unfortunately, since the vote was not unanimous, the Council was forced to vote a second time to direct a wave of letters and calls at Council members. When the vote came up again, the meeting was well attended by nudists but also by scowling Bible-toting matrons.

"From the beginning of the 90-minute discussion," said the L.A. Times, "the change in the lawmakers' attitude became increasingly apparent. Several councilmen who reversed their positions conceded that they were under heavy pressure from constituents to outlaw nudity without exception.

Conceding they had been receiving unusallly heavy pressure from church groups, Council finally voted 12 to 1 to ban nudism on Venice Beach completely, rearming the police this time with a City ordinance specifying a remarkably conservative dress code for beachwear.

Employing noted First Amendment attorney Stan Fleishman, Beachfornt, in concert with the American Civil Liberties Union, filed for a permanent injunction against the ordinance. The injunction was denied and in September 1974 Beachfront filed an appeal, raising six Constitutional issues- the ordinance discriminated against females; was in conflict with state and federal constitutional provisions guaranteeing the right to enjoy life and pursue happiness and privacy; had no legitimate urgency; attempted to regulate an area pre-emptied by the state violated religious liberty and was uncostiitutionally vague and broad.

But again Beachfront;s suit was denied. Meanwhile, the ACLU dropped out of the fight. By now Beachfront, worn out and demoralized, had neither the funds nor the energy to carry the case higher in the state court system.

The following summer L.A. County passed a similar ordinance, and before long done ordinances of almost identical language were appearing in many municipalities and other counties in Southern California.

Everyone remembers that 1976 was the great BiCentennial Year, and there was a good deal of talk in the air about freedom and all that Beachfront planned a mass rally, to take place on Zuma Beach on "Nude Beach Day" (later dubbed National Nude Beach Day as BFUSA began to coordinate with Lee Baxandall and others in the East). The rally was widely advertised in the underground press and on liberal radio stations like KPFK. An attendance in the thousands was anticipated.

As it was 1,200 nudists showed up. An that day saw all of them controlled by 70 sheriff's deputies from 8 a.m. until late afternoon. There were cops in patrol cars, cops on motorcycles, cops on foot with walkie-talkies, cops in helicopters, cops on boats, and even cops on horseback outlined against the sky. The cops controlled the beach, the water, the air and even the surrounding hills. Towards middlay, the 1,200 nudists present gathered together in a large circle in the middle of the otherwise empty beach. Games were played and speeches were made, but there was no nude-in.

No one will ever know how many hundreds were turned away by a police barricade of the only road into the parking lot. No one will ever know how many thousands turned away with a shrug as their car radios informed them that the roads were clogged into the beach, that the rally was unreachable. At 3:30 p.m. the police said that they had turned away 8,000 and that the traffic was extended 9 miles south and 12 miles north of the single road leading into the beach parking lot.

BFUSA tried to put the best face it could on the Zuma Beach 76 bicentennial rally, but it had to be judged a failure even though the event generated enormous local and even national publicity. It was sabotaged, first of all by timidity on the part of a majority of the Board of Directors, who voted to tell the police beforehand no attempt would be made to encourage a nude-in -apparently hoping that one might take place spontaneously. But surrounded by a small army of armed uniformed men disciplined in riot control. 1,200 nudists were not enough to achieve critical mass. And the other thousands never made it; they were shut off; the choice of the site was, militarily speaking, a disaster. Nevertheless, BFUSA's leaders learned some lessons in that defeat. In fact, one of the great positive values of the early Beachfront battles was that in suffering a defeat they learned a great deal about what not to do next time.

Well, let us not say "demise". Beachfront U.S.A. lay dormant for seven years. During the mid-1980's the Western Sunbathing Public Relations Team decided that the ultimate breakthrough in nudist growth would depend upon the freebeaches, factories capable of constantly generating new nudists as the public was finally able to interface with real nudists practicing real nudism. And in October 1986 the Team decided that its attack strategy would be better served if it was separate from the WSA and thus free to recruit beachers who were prejudiced against the formal movement. Since its goals were essentially the same as Beachfront's, the new group chose to take on that name once again and revive the struggle to take back the 1974 freebeach at Venice, the central beach for the city of Los Angeles.

The formal beginning of what is now the Callen-Davis Memorial Fund was on the afternoon of 9 Mar 86 at the Olive Dell Nudist Ranch high up on a hillside in Reche Canyon, Colton, California. At a meeting of the Western Sunbathing Association Pubic Relations Team, an impatient Robin Bruno handed Cec Cinder a $10. bill, stating that he wanted to get the Fund started with his contribution. Creation of the Fund had been outlined in Cinder's white paper,FB Venice 88, and already much discussed as part of a larger strategy, but it had not yet beeen formalized.

Cinder invited Bruno and seven distinguished American nudists to join him as Directors in the formation of The Eugene Callen Memorial Fund, named for the by now deceased founder of Beachfront U.S.A. Cinder then made a second contribution, opened a bank account and asked then WSA Secretary/Treasurer David Cheek to serve as the Fund's Treasurer.

The other seven Directors were Lee Baxandall of Wisconcin, President of The Naturist Society, Inc; Ed Lange, founder and Director of Elysium, Inc.; Beverly Price of Phoenix, Arizona, founder and President of the Arizona Wildflowers nudist travel club; Hap Hathaway, former American Sunbathing Association President; William "Dave" Davis, California nude-beach activist and founder of the Nudist Information Center; and Ricc Bieber, another prominent Southern California nude beach activist.

All of the nudist leaders still serve the fund as Directors except Dave Davis, who died of cancer in 1987. Dave was replaced on vote of the Board by his widow Suzy Davis and the Fund's name was changed to the Callen-Davis Memorial Fund in honor of Dave's courageous contributions to the freebeach struggle in Southern California.

From the beginning the Fund was operated differently from any previous nudist legal fund (in fact the proliferation of these is a subsequent phenomenon). The Fund was dedicated, its books were wide open for anyone to see and donor lists were published regularly in the nudist press.

Money came in steadily (it still does). By the end of 1986, donations were up to $3,077. The Fund continued to grow. By the middle of 1992 the amount collected totaled $30,915.97. About 2/3 of the money collected came through direct donations by the WSA.

While technically ndependent, the Fund was through interlocking directorates, "affiliated" with Beachfront U.S.A. It also received, as noted strong support from the WSA, as did Beachfront itself. We might say that BFUSA was the WSA's military arm and that the Fund was Beachfront's financial arm (Beachfront has its own small separate treasure and budget).

The Fund never pressured anybody to contribute. All donations were, and remain, strictly voluntary. They are made by people from all across the United States and even from some foreigners, who appreciated and wanted to support Beachfront's agressive approach to nudist rights. In the past, nudists waited until they were attacked, then put up their legal defense. Offensive operations were unheard of. Beachfront put an end to that kind of conservatism, insisting that nudist rights were already present in the Constitution, particularly in the First and Ninth Amendments, and that a constant offensive battle needed to be waged for their acknowledgement.

In 1991 Beachfront U.S.A. hired attorney Stanley Raskin of Torrance, California, and asked for an injunction against the City of Los Angeles's 1974 anti-nudity ordinance, this time in the Federal District Court and went to the Ninth Circuit Appelate Court. This court also turned BFUSA back, citing a previous decision by the United States courts. The injunction was denied by the Supreme Court (Barnes vs. Glen Theater), which held that "public nudity was the evil the state seeks to prevent" and that the state has a right to do so by requiring dancing girls in bars to wear pasties and a g-string. Barnes is fatal to your case, the Ninth Circuit told Beachfront.

Protesting that nudists are a far cry from barroom dancing girls, Beachfront asked the high court to overrule the Ninth Circuit. But once again, in early 1993, the attempt at an injunction was turned back by the U.S. Supreme Court's refusal to hear BFUSA's petition.

Accordingly, frustrated at the highest level but with money still in the bank and the organization still intact, Beachfront U.S.A. is seeking a new path -possibly now turning its attention to the California Department of Parks and Recreation, which controls numerous beaches along the coast.

ALPS-ADRIATIC NATURISTS MEET –SHOULD OTHERS JOIN IT?

Angelos Mimikopoulos –the feisty young Greek who was co-convener with TNS of the Naturist Conference On Nude Beaches at Antiparos Island in Summer 1986– reports that the Alps-Adriatic Meeting of the Austrians, Germans and East and Central Europeans was held again at Rovinj on Croatia's Adriatic seacoast across from Venice, in April 1997. About 700 attended, an astonishing growth.

Mimikopoulos hopes to build on this congenial, sports- and friendship-driven forum which is currently regional. He thinks it has potential as the magnet to draw the rest of the world, outside of West Europe, to a Forum and Olympics of Naturism.

Already well established as the convenient and low-budget location for Naturists from Bavaria to Greece and Austria to Moscow to gather annually, the Alps-Adriatic can become a global destination.

Meanwhile the French, North German and Dutch Naturists pursue their rather narcissistic idea and strategy of a mirror-image organization to the European Economic Union (EEU). They provide all due pomp and circumstance but little else is on their agendas.

The INF is already semi-split three ways–into Western Europe, the AANR and The Rest Of Us. Angelos wants to act on that emergent distribution of alliances.

The Rest Of Us seem to hold little interest for the self-anointed in the Center Of The Universe at either Antwerp or, far more elliptically, at Murfreesboro, Tenn., at this time.

And yet, what could be more internationalist in principle than our union of brothers and sisters under the skin? The world doesn't hold still while the EEU lookalikes step out of their vehicle for a pint with the good old boys at the good old corner tavern.

There are world, not just West European, challenges to be met. And solidarity with hard-pressed, exemplary Naturists in many overlooked nations to face. Wherever the Internet goes, we can go.

I.N.O.E. PROMOTES

Internacia Naturista Organizo Esperantista is a bridge organization between naturism and the international language Esperanto. Its members emphasize the utility of Esperanto in reaching fellow naturists of other languages and cultures, and in giving them a sense of community and belonging across national and ethnic boundaries. The basic tenet of Esperanto, a hope for international understanding and the brotherhood of man, is thus being actively pursued by the naturist I.N.O.E. members.

Simultaneously, these Esperantist-naturists promote naturism during international Esperanto conventions and occasionally during national meetings as well. I.N.O.E. will have an official agenda –seminars, and perhaps excursions to naturist terrains– on the program of the Esperanto convention, a form of “open house” that attracts newcomers curious about naturism. New adherents of naturism are gained, and I.N.O.E. gets more members, too.

The official membership organ of I.N.O.E., Naturista Vivo is really the best tie among membership. Everyone is kept up-to-date on naturist–esperantist news as well as developments in the movement, and illustrated articles fill the issues. Other information and small ads appear at the end of each issue. The editor of Naturista Vivo, Prof. Ervin Fenyvesi (also 2nd Vice President) of Budapest, does a marvelous job on a small budget. He was previously the editor of Hungara Vivo, is an intellectual, and a highly activated naturist-esperantist. Thanks to his dedicated work with Naturista Vivo, our widespread network of members across the world is kept in close contact.

An even greater –behind the scenes– amount of work is being done, like in most organizations, by the secretary/treasurer. He is Mr. Ferdinand Simon of Brussels. Keeping track of the far-flung membership, of dues paid and dues payable, of bylaws changes, new officers, events in the association, etc., etc. and sending out circulars about all this to the concerned officers and other interested parties, is a monstrously large task. Mr. Simon does this as a true professional, keeping his finger on the pulse of everything going on.

1st Vice President, Mrs. Bernice K. Scott of Great Britain is extremely active promoting naturism during Esperanto conventions. She deserves a medal for her efforts.

The glorious president of I.N.O.E. –I was just elected to that elevated position– is in reality merely a figurehead, like a constitutional monarch. Another officer can substitute for him in his absence. My only qualifications for the office are my fair knowledge of Esperanto (using the language for 40 years), being a naturist for 32 years, and my skills and experience as a naturist photojournalist for the same 32 years. Veteran executives are promoted to this level of incompetence. For 9 years I have intensively promoted and publicized naturism in Eastern Europe, behind the Iron Curtain as it was called, and to a large extent with Esperantist contacts. Now, I guess, they consider me over the hill and want me in the figurehead slot.

The I.N.O.E. coordinator for Eastern Europe, Mr. Jerzy Czarnohorski of Tychy, Poland, is very active locally where he organizes a naturist/esperantist camping week (F.N.E.T.) each August at a site close to Przemyśl, together with the local Galanty family.

Mgr. Czesław Baranowski of Koszalin, Poland, organizes every year the Baltic Esperantist Spring week in Mielno, on the Baltic Sea. During this international Esperantist meeting, Czesław Baranowski also promotes naturism and takes interested participants down to a nearby naturist beach.

Many other I.N.O.E. members around the world actively promote naturism among local Esperantists, and among naturists emphasize the importance of Esperanto for international contacts.

During the yearly Sports Week at Natours, Kft., Sziksósfürdő, Hungary in July, 1992, Jerzy Czarnohorski of Poland vacationing here with his family, Claude Martins of France, on his way to Romania, and Leif Heilberg of the U.S.A., doing photojournalistic coverage of the event, met with Ervin Fenyvesi of Budapest, Jerzy speaks only Polish and Esperanto; Claude speaks French and Esperanto; Leif speaks English and Esperanto; and Ervin speaks Hungarian and Esperanto. Obviously, business was conducted in the only common language.

Esperantist naturists, through their international contacts, keep abreast of naturist developments abroad and inform their local fellow naturist about important matters. Some, like Ferdinand Simon and Leif Heilberg, also distribute naturist news to many activists, associations, and publications around the world. Frequently, the information is originally in Esperanto, then translated into English or French for distribution to those naturists not speaking Esperanto.

I.N.O.E. may be a small organization, but with a far-flung network of members (like agents) in many countries. The double ideological tie of Esperanto with the common practice of naturism, knit the members tightly together. An appeal for information or assistance usually elicits an immediate response. Both naturism and the Esperanto movement thus benefit from I.N.O.E.’s network of activists.
